Copenhagen Food Odyssey – Restaurant Noma

Having won the World’s best Restaurant for 4 years running, we were lucky to secure a reservation in 2014. Noma’s tasting menu was unique and minimalist, which focused on fresh, seasonal and local Nordic produce, synonymous with the modern wave of Scandinavian cuisine. The wine pairing looked fantastic and although it is often a great way to bring out the subtle flavours of each course, we opted for the food only menu. Given the generous pourings of wine with each course, we would’ve drunk the equivalent of 14 glasses each! Nonetheless, with the Sommelier’s help we each selected 4 glasses of vino that complemented most of the dishes well.

In our experience, most restaurant owners or head chefs, tend to leave the grunt work in the capable hands of their young apprentices. So, we were really surprised to see René Redzepi with his apron on hard at work in the kitchen. Not only did we have a fantastic dining experience, we were chuffed to have met the Masterchef himself after our meal. René was so down to earth and friendly. Although it was almost mid-night, he took the time to show us around his kitchen and spent some time chatting to us about Noma, Queen Mary of Denmark, his next venture and even asked us for tips on where to eat in London.

Located in an old warehouse, the ambience at Noma was cosy and unpretentious and the food simple, yet adventurous. From Nordic Coconuts, Aebleskiver & mukikku (say what?!) to Reindeer Moss, we thoroughly enjoyed every dish. All in all, a very memorable experience and we are fortunate to have had the opportunity to experience this.
